Guess where I first head this group? Would you believe me if I told you that I heard the Squirrel Nut Zippers on a modern rock station? Imagine hearing elements of swing, dixie, and calypso between songs by Metallica and Rage Against the Machine. Well, that's where I heard them: it seems that the group was so radical, so different, that the radio station considered them unique enough to put them on their playlists. They were also in heavy rotation on MTV with their calypso-laden hit Hell. It seems that retro is in. The album is made of 12 songs (the album is very brief: play time is only40-minutes or) which are a mixture of swing, dixie, calypso, and vocals. One of the vocalist, Katherine Whalen, sounds so much like Billie Holliday it was scary. In addition, there is also a multimedia presentation on the consisting of interviews, photographs, lyrics, and video clips. It's nice to know that swing is still in style.
